Fumble fails to fluster Wayne

Oct. 05, 2013 @ 01:36 AM

DELBARTON, W.Va. — For the first time in 2013, the turnover bug bit Wayne.

The Pioneers were too tough for it to do much damage Friday night.

Wayne overcame four turnovers and a gritty effort from host Mingo Central to upend the Miners, 40-12, and extend the state’s longest winning streak to 28 in the process.

Grant Ferguson accounted for four touchdowns in the win.

In a game that featured wild shifts in momentum, the Pioneers struck first, taking just two plays to cover 65 yards on the opening possession when Ferguson connected with senior Curt Followay for a 31-yard touchdown and the lead just 26 seconds into the game.

With Wayne leading 27-0 in the fourth quarter, the Miners started a wild offensive flurry when Stevie Hammond connected with Alex Lee on a 24 yard touchdown pass on fourth down to cut the deficit to 27-6.
Wayne fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, and Hammond found Lee again from 28 yards out on the next play as Mingo Central drew within 27-12.

But after Class AA No. 3 Wayne (5-0) fell on a squib kick, Ferguson took the first play from scrimmage 60 yards for a score to put the lead back at 33-12.

In all, the teams scored three touchdowns in 25 seconds of play.

The Pioneers’ final touchdown didn’t take long either.  One play after Ferguson intercepted a pass, he hit Cody Stiltner with a  40-yard touchdown toss to put the game away just one minute later.

Ferguson finished 4-of-7 for 96 yards and 3 TD passing, while rushing for 76 yards on six carries and intercepting a pass.

Stiltner had two catches for 57 yards, both touchdowns.

Mason Hodge led Wayne’s rushing attack with 77 yards on 7 carries.  The Pioneers ran just 35 plays from scrimmage in the game, but scored on six of them, including three straight at one point.

Hammond threw for 150 yards for No. 11 Mingo Central (3-2). The Miners were the first team to score two touchdowns against Wayne’s first team defense in the same game since Scott in 2011.

Wayne will return home to host Scott next Friday night for Homecoming at Pioneer Field.
