Midland runs 2nd in MSAC
CHARLESTON -- Cabell Midland victories in the boys 800, 3200, 110 hurdles and shuttle hurdles helped the Knights take second place Friday night in the Mountain State Athletic Conference track and field championships at Laidley Field.
Parkersburg took the boys team title with 95, points, edging Cabell Midland with 92, and finishing ahead of Huntington High (57), Winfield (54) and Capital (48) in the top five.
Cabell Midland's Jacob Burcham did his thing in the 800-meter run as a repeat winner at the MSAC meet with a time of 1:54.21, but was denied a repeat victory in the 400 by Jacob Kilgore of Spring Valley.
Kilgore won the 400 with a time of 50.46 seconds with Burcham second in 50.71.
Burcham is the defending Class AAA state champion in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
Avery Campbell from Cabell Midland won for the second consecutive year in the 3200 with a time of 10:00.04. Runner-up Jack McGee from Huntington High was clocked in 10:02.23.
Niles Dailey from the Knights was the 110 hurdles winner (15.50) in a close finish with Ryan Gatrell of Huntington High (15.56) and Nate Moore of Cabell Midland (15.56).
Cabell Midland also won the 4x110 shuttle hurdles relay with Jacob Morgan, Dailey, Daniel Jarrell and Moore posting a time of 58.80.
Huntington High had a victory in the 4x100 relay. Fred Hightower, Brandon Morrison, Ryan McGuffin and Bryce Jones had a time of 44.49.
Hurricane was the 4x400 relay winner and Winfield was first in the 4x800 relay.
Winfield claimed the girls team crown with 130 points and was followed by Parkersburg (119.33), Hurricane (78), Cabell Midland (56.33) and Huntington High (51).
Barkley Castro from Winfield won the 800 (2:22.30). Jesse Erlandson of the Generals was first in the 300 hurdles (47.41).
Castro also ran on the winning 4x400 relay team (4:14.72), Erlandson was on the first place 4x200 relay (1:47.11) and Anika Shah was part of the winning 4x100 (50.62) and 4x200 relays.
Winfield's other victory was in the 4x102.5 shuttle hurdles relay where Mackenzie Arthur, Erlandson, Amy Dingess and Jayne Lawman had a time of 1:06.97.
Morgan Hensley from Huntington High won the long jump (15-feet, 11 inches).
Cabell Midland's girls had a victory by Jakeya Perrin in the 400 (59.83).
Abby Watson from Hurricane was a double winner in the shot put (36-4.50) and discus (123-6). Lauren London of the Redskins won the pole vault by clearing 8-feet, 6 inches.
