Mundy, Kinker, Wellman make first team all-state
HUNTINGTON — Joey Mundy from Huntington High, Seth Kinker from Cabell Midland and Elijah Wellman from Spring Valley were first team selections on the Class AAA all-state baseball team.
J.R. Rogoszewski from Hurricane and Zack Minnick from Logan also made the first unit selected by members of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
All-state second team players included Cabell Midland junior Tyler Hayes as a utility selection, Hurricane junior pitcher Austin Hensley and Winfield senior utility pick Josh Bumgarner.
Players named in the special mention category included Stephen Holland from Huntington High; Taylor Kuhn and Brady Elkins from Cabell Midland; Colby Webb of Spring Valley; Trey Dawson of Hurricane; Colby Brogan from Lincoln County; and Jordan Clark and Brandon Wright of Winfield.
Special mention players also were Alex Somerville of Point Pleasant along with Johnny Morrison and Troy Burgess from Logan.
Bryton Jobe from Cabell Midland and Tyler Radcliffe from Spring Valley were honorable mention picks joined by Riley Metz and Connor Adams of Hurricane; Brynnan Fakourey of Lincoln County; Austin Toler from Point Pleasant; and Josh Rein and Chase Preston of Logan.
Mundy, a junior infielder, hit .515 for the Highlanders with 17 doubles, 12 stolen bases and 31 RBIs. Kinker had a .468 batting average for the Knights and a 6-4 pitching record with a 2.30 ERA. The Cabell Midland junior was an all-state utility selection.
Wellman was 5-1 with a 1.89 ERA as a senior pitcher for the Timberwolves. He had 61 strikeouts to just 14 walks in 47 innings.
Rogozewski was a utility selection as a sophomore with a 6-2 record and 0.72 ERA pitching while also batting .368. Minnick, also a sophomore utility selection, had a 7-2 pitching record and 1.38 ERA for Logan while hitting .535 and driving in 39 runs.
