Final week will shape playoffs

November 04, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- West Virginia's final regular season high school football ratings have several teams looking at where the chips might fall next week when the playoffs begin.

In Class AAA, Spring Valley is once again tied for fourth place, but this week it is with Fairmont Senior, who dropped its first contest of the year against Bridgeport over the weekend. The Timberwolves take on 3-6 Winfield this week to end the regular season, and a win could potentially put Spring Valley in line for two home contests for the postseason.

Meanwhile, Hurricane is still clinging to hope for a AAA postseason berth at No. 18 (16 schools get in), but faces No. 21 Cabell Midland to end its season. A win and the Redskins are likely in, but the Midland Knights played well in a loss to South Charleston last Saturday -- a loss that ended hopes of the postseason.

In Class AA, the plight is much simpler for Wayne, who is still at No. 1. A win over Class AAA Logan and the Pioneers are at home throughout the playoffs regardless of who their opponents will be.

As far as the Class AA ratings are concerned, eyes will be on No. 10 Point Pleasant as the Big Blacks host No. 12 Chapmanville. The outcome of the game will certainly shake up the bottom tier of the Class AA ranks for the final 16 that make the playoffs.

Tolsia's loss to Lawrence County (Ky.) last week dropped the Rebels to No. 20 and essentially ended any chance of a playoff berth.

Class A's ratings have a new No. 1 this week as Richwood moves to the top of the list. Man falls to No. 2 where the Hillbillies are tied with Madonna.

Wahama is locked at No. 9 in Class A with Tucker County while Matewan is in a tie at No. 15 for one of the final playoff spots.
