Prep Notebook: Two former Marshall linemen make Kentucky coaching debuts
ASHLAND -- A pair of former Marshall football players kicked off their head coaching careers in the Bluegrass State last weekend.
Nathan McPeek, better known to Marshall fans as "Nate", and Luke Salmons -- both offensive linemen for the Herd in the early part of the decade -- traded in helmets for headsets and are now leading their own programs.
McPeek is leading the Fairview Eagles, a Class 1A team in Westwood, Ky., located just outside of Ashland's city limits. The Eagles got their 2008 campaign off to a strong start on Friday night with a 27-0 win over Lewis County.
The former Herd left tackle from Russell, Ky., watched as his offensive line helped the Fairview running game gain 240 yards en route to the win. Following the game, he was on the business end of a Gatorade bath for his first head coaching victory.
McPeek's former line mate Salmons did not fare so well in his inaugural outing. Salmons, who took over for Billy Goldsmith at Lawrence County, watched his team fall to North Laurel 18-8 in the Cumberland Valley Bowl.
Salmons, a Ravenswood, W.Va., native, also has former Marshall quarterback Jimmy Skinner as an assistant coach.
"SURE HANDS" LAMB: Ironton is not known for throwing the football around much in coach Bob Lutz' scheme. However, receiver Michael Lamb certainly made the most of his opportunities Friday night.
Lamb caught four passes for 135 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown and a 42-yard pass to set up another touchdown as the Fighting Tigers romped Out Lady of Mt. Carmel (Toronto, Can.) 54-6 at Tanks Memorial Stadium.
KHSAA PENALIZES LAWRENCE COUNTY: In addition to a loss on the football field Friday night, Lawrence County's baseball program took a hit this week when the KHSAA fined the school $1,000 and suspended assistant baseball coach Travis Feltner for the first seven games of the 2009 season for violation of the KHSAA's practice of sportsmanship policy.
The baseball program also was placed on probation for one year and because of what the KHSAA deemed a "lack of action" by school officials, the KHSAA also placed the entire athletic program on probation for the 2008-09 school year.
EUTON, JACKSON RULED ELIGIBLE: Former Rose Hill basketball standouts Dakotah Euton and Chad Jackson were ruled eligible by the KHSAA last week following a 16-0 unanimous vote in their favor at an eligibility hearing by the Board of Control.
Both Euton and Jackson left Rose Hill late in the 2007-08 school year to go to Scott County, one of Kentucky's top basketball powers, but initially, KHSAA commissioner Brigid DeVries ruled the duo ineligible.
HONOR ROLL: Here are a look at some of Friday's top football performances:
