Ashland falls to defending champs
NEWPORT, Ky. -- Newport Central Catholic, the defending Kentucky Class 2A football champion, had too much Friday night for the Ashland Tomcats.
The Thoroughbreds pulled away by 10 at halftime and logged a 37-26 victory in Ashland head coach Tony Love's debut.
Quentin Baker had a monster game for the Tomcats. The sophomore back unofficially carried 14 times for 236 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns.
Baker had an 8-yard touchdown run and a 46-yard scoring carry.
James Queen also tallied twice for the Tomcats. Queen's TDs were both 13-yard plays -- one a run and one a pass thrown by Hunter Prince.
Baker's second touchdown pulled Ashland to within 23-19 in the third period.
Ashland had a long drive for a touchdown with about 7:30 remaining to get within 37-26 on the Queen reception from Prince.
NewCath quarterback Mac Franzen threw for 109 yards and ran for 104. Franzen passed for one touchdown and also ran for one.

LAWRENCE CO. 56, BOYD CO. 15: Lawrence County pulled away, 14-0, after the first quarter. Cole Mosley scored on a 12-yard run and Timmy Dalton hauled in a 62-yard touchdown pass from A.J. Cyrus.
Cyrus ran 5 yards for a score and a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.
Billy McCoy put Boyd County on the scoreboard when he dashed in from the 2 later in the second period.
Noah Lambert caught a touchdown bomb from Cyrus before the half ended and the Bulldogs had a 28-8 advantage at the break.
Mosley added another touchdown in period three.
Lambert's pass interception in the fourth quarter led to a Derek Ferguson 3-yard TD run.
The Bulldogs' Cyrus had 152 rushing yards and scored twice.
