Knights fall to South Charleston

November 01, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

ONA -- Cabell Midland's football team was backed against the wall, facing two must-win games to punch its ticket to the playoffs.

South Charleston, the defending Class AAA state champion, was too much of an obstacle. The Black Eagles rolled Saturday with junior Ray Coleman rushing for 204 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 35-21 victory at Cabell Midland.

Cabell Midland, sitting at 4-5 with a remaining game Friday at Hurricane, is in danger of missing the postseason.

Black Eagles' coach John Messinger said he has one of the state's top backs.

"I think you can put him in there with (Allen) Wasonga, Keion Wright and all these guys around the state," Messinger said. "The guy is averaging close to 10 yards a carry, he has numbers just like those other guys. Also, he can play defense, he is just a great athlete."

South Charleston (8-1) came out strong out of the gate, scoring on its first two possessions for a 14-0 lead. One of those scores was Coleman's 80-yard touchdown run.

The Knights continued to fight to stay in the contest. Just before halftime Michael Brumfield tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Matt Riggio.

Unfortunately, Cabell Midland didn't contain the South Charleston offense.

A wide-open Tevin Spurlock scored on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Harris in the third quarter, giving South Charleston a 21-7 lead.

After another Riggio touchdown catch, Coleman crossed the goal line for the second time.

South Charleston's Maurice Mekhene rushed for a 23-yard score in the fourth period.

"We went toe-to-toe with I think the eventual state champions," said Cabell Midland coach Chip McMillian. "We came up on the short end. We gave them all we had."

Riggio led the Knights with four receptions for 73 yards. Brumfield passed for 161 yards, but was intercepted three times.
