St. Joe girls fall to highly-rated team

FAIRFAX, Va. -- St. John's (D.C.), No. 2 in the All-Met girls basketball rankings of the Washington Post newspaper, downed Huntington St. Joe, 59-53, in a Saturday game of the Art Turner Memorial Classic.

St. Joe is the five-time defending Class A state champion and ranked No. 1 this season.

Amari Carter and Niya Beverly both netted 15 points for St. John's (2-0), which had four players in double figures.

The St. Joe Irish (1-1) were led by Mychal Johnson with 21 points. Griffin Dempsey and Asia Petitte added 14 and 12 respectively.

Parkersburg Catholic visits St. Joe for a 7 p.m. Monday game.

CHESAPEAKE 53, GALLIPOLIS 42: Chesapeake posted a victory in the University of Rio Grande Girls Basketball Classic.

Jordan Porter's double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds led the Panthers (2-0).

Atiya Spaulding added 12 points.

Gallipolis (2-3) had Micah Curfman with 20 points.

Chesapeake is at home Monday against Portsmouth.
