CEREDO -- For years, Phil Selby has cheered on touchdowns for the high school teams in Wayne County.
Whether rooting on the C-K Wonders or leading the cheers for Spring Valley once the Wonders consolidated with Vinson and Buffalo, Selby has been a mainstay at Wayne County sporting events.
But on Saturday night, it was Selby who was receiving the cheers on the field of action for the semi-pro West Virginia Crash.
And with the game well in hand for the Crash, Selby got to live out his ultimate dream.
He ran in a 2-yard touchdown with 2:42 remaining to cap the West Virginia scoring in the Crash's 48-7 win over the Ada (Ohio) Dark Knights.
It was not only a big win for the Crash, who moved closer to a playoff berth. It was also a chance to cheer on a guy who has unconditionally cheered on the youth of the Tri-State for decades.
"If I don't every do anything else with coaching, I'm glad that I got to do this," West Virginia Crash coach Ryan Barnhouse said. "This was extremely important to me. What happened here (Saturday) is bigger than the game."
