HURRICANE -- Halfway through the first quarter, Hurricane had a 9-5 lead on Huntington High.

Alexis Williams connected on a 3-pointer with 2:46 left in the opening period to start the Lady Highlanders on an 11-0 run and on the way to a 71-34 girls basketball victory Monday night at Hurricane High School.

"In the first half we didn't play the way we should play," Huntington coach Lonnie Lucas said. "I said don't look at the scoreboard."

Senior Kiana Evans, who's headed to Marshall University, led the Highlanders with 16 points.

Evans is No. 2 in the Mountain State Athletic Conference in scoring with a 20.6 average. Freshman Erica Budd added 12 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.

"It was fun," Budd said of her productive evening.

Huntington (13-3) is ranked No. 6 in Class AAA. The busy week for the Lady Highlanders continues Wednesday when Nitro visits. Game time is 5:30 p.m. On Friday, Huntington travels to No. 3 Spring Valley.

Hurricane (5-9) has lost seven of its last eight games.

Budd got six of her 12 points in the third period when the Lady Highlanders outscored the Lady Redskins, 29-10.

"You do the best you can all the time," Budd said.

"In the third quarter we played good basketball," Lucas said.

Huntington took 90 shots, making 27. The Lady Highlanders finished with 72 rebounds. Many times, they kept getting the rebounds on missed shots until they scored.

"We've got two of the best rebounders in the state," Budd said of Evans and center Dominique Gibson. "You push yourself all the time. We go after all the balls."

Audrey Barber topped the Lady Redskins with eight points. Abby Watson, Hurricane's top scorer and No. 3 in the MSAC at 19.3 per game, managed just five points.

Hurricane's next game is Wednesday at Winfield.
