Coal Grove defeats South Point, 70-67

SOUTH POINT -- Alex Bare converted two free throws with 12 seconds lift to lift Coal Grove to a 70-67 win over South Point in Ohio Valley Conference boys basketball Friday.

The Pointers took a timeout with 10 seconds left to set up a potential game-tying basket. However, they missed on two attempts.

The game was wild and tight in the fourth period. Bare's basket and free throw for a three-point play with 42 seconds to play gave the Hornets a 68-64 lead. John Johnson responded with a quick three-pointer to cut the margin to 68-67 and set up the dramatic finish.

Conor Markins led Coal Grove with 23 points and Bare finished wtih 17.

Johnson and Payne Meadows each hit for 18 to pace the Pointers. Johnson netted 11 in the fourth.

SOUTH POINT 19 11 19 18 -- 67: Kratzenberg 1, Johnson 18, Wagoner 2, Majher 2, Adams 3, Meadows 18, Barnes 17, Boggs 6.

HANNAN 53, UNION 47: Hannan (4-16) upset Union (12-5) in the third-place game in the West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament in Summersville. It was in the small school bracket.

Hannan was led by Paul Holley, who scored 18 points. Brad Fannin also had 13 for Hannan.

Travis Murphy netted 16 to lead Union.

ASHLAND 62, JOHNSON CENTRAL 55: Ashland got 22 points from sophomore Dikembe Dixson and beat Johnson Central (4-10). The Tomcats (19-8) also got 13 points from Logan Salow and 11 from Zach Hart.

CABELL MIDLAND 45, ST. ALBANS 29: Cabell Midland had double-double performances Friday from Sierra Jordan and Emily Pitkin in a 45-29 girls basketball victory at St. Albans.

Jordan scored 18 and pulled down 11 rebounds. Pitkin had 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Grace Jarrell had 10 assists for the Knights (14-5).

Torri Wilson had 11 points and Lexie Cooper 10 for the Red Dragons.

CABELL MIDLAND 10 8 12 15 -- 45: Jordan 18, Pitkin 11, Ellis 5, Bias 3, Haggerty 2, Harden 2.

SPRING VALLEY 76, NITRO 48: Madison Morris scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Spring Valley (18-3), which led 44-21 at halftime.

Sarah Kelley added 14 points for the Timberwolves.

Savannah Shamblin paced the Wildcats with 24 points.
