Midland's Tolbert to join top travel team

Feb. 14, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Cabell Midland High School pitcher Abbie Tolbert will be playing summer softball for one of the top travel programs in the nation.

Tolbert, a sophomore, was invited to join the Gold Coast Hurricanes of Florida.

The Gold Coast Hurricanes won a national title two years ago and finished in the top five at the ASA 18-U Gold Nationals four times in the past six years. More than 150 players for the Hurricanes have gone to play for NCAA Division I teams.

Tolbert's pitching coach, Denny Tincher, connected her with a Delaware team that needed help for a Florida team last fall. Through that experience, she gained enough attention to be invited to tryouts for the Hurricanes.

"It is a great opportunity to improve my skills and work to reach my potential," Tolbert said. "I will have to work hard to play at this level, but it's the kind of challenge I want."

It will be a busy summer for Tolbert because the Gold Coast team plays from coast to coast in the most competitive tournaments.
