HUNTINGTON -- Katelyn McGuffin was the recipient of the 2012-13 Dick Griffith Scholarship from the Huntington Tennis Association.

McGuffin is a 2012 Huntington High School graduate attending Marshall University as a communications major.

The scholarship was developed by the Huntington Tennis Association in memory of long time tennis player and supporter Dick Griffith of Kenova. Griffith, known as "Mr. Tennis," died in 2009.

McGuffin is the daughter of Aaron and Melissa McGuffin and was a member of the National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honorary), Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Latin Club, and was the Senior Class Vice President at Huntington High. She received Most Outstanding Awards in Science and Social Studies, and was the 2012 Wendy's High School Heisman Award Winner for Huntington High School.

In tennis, she was a four-year tennis letter-winner for the Highlanders while capturing three state championships.

The Dick Griffith Scholarship is administered by the Foundation for the Tri-State Community, Inc. and has been awarded by the HTA annually since 1999-2000 to a deserving college student from Cabell and Wayne County in West Virginia; Lawrence County in Ohio; or Boyd County in Kentucky.

The scholarship is based upon sportsmanship, moral character, citizenship and academic performance. The scholarship has provided $17,000 to assist in the college education of the recipients.
