HUNTINGTON -- David Bias is proving he can run with anyone.

Bias was a Cabell Midland High School distance runner on three state championship teams who won the Class AAA 800-meter state title twice and was part of state champion 4x800 relay teams three times.

Last weekend the Cabell Midland graduate ran a new event, the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Bias placed sixth in a heat race and earned a 15th place finish with a time of 9:43.73 in the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the Ohio State campus in Columbus.

Earlier this month Bias won a steeplechase race at Laidley Field in Charleston to qualify.

"David is one of the most talented distance runners to ever set foot on Midland's track." said Knights coach Chris Parsons. "Even though the steeplechase is a new event for him, he demonstrated at the Junior Nationals that he could be a major force in the steeple at the college level."

The USATF Junior Nationals are for athletes age 19 and under.

Curtis Carr from the BYU track team won with a time of 8:55.64. Carr and runner-up Mikel Thomas from the University of Nebraska (8:58.67) advance to run July 8-13 at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Bias was the first Cabell Midland athlete to compete in the USATF Junior National Championships.
