Northland's first loss of year costly

COLUMBUS -- Jeff Foreman led four Mentor players in double figures with 20 points as the Cardinals upset top-ranked and unbeaten Columbus Northland 80-69 in the opening Division I semifinal at the boys state tournament at Ohio State's Value City Arena on Friday.

The score was tied 13 times and there were 14 lead changes. But Mentor (24-5) closed out the game by making seven of nine free throws after Northland (28-1), trailing 66-63, made only one field goal during the final minutes.

TOLEDO ROGERS 58, CINCINNATI WALNUT HILLS 51: Devonte Pratt's jumper with 52.8 seconds left broke a 50-50 tie as Toledo Rogers (21-7) beat Cincinnati Walnut Hills in a Division I semifinal.

Sterling Gilmore hit one of two free throws for Walnut Hills (27-2) to make it 52-51, but four foul shots by Clemmye Owens V of Rogers put the game out of reach. Tribune Dailey Jr. capped the win with a dunk at the buzzer off a pass by Tony Kynard II, who had 25 points.

DJ Wingfield had 20 points for Walnut Hills (23-1).

LEIPSIC 61, LANCASTER FISHER CATHOLIC 48: Zach Kuhlman scored 24 points to lead Leipsic (25-4) in a Division IV semifinal. Kuhlman hit two field goals, including a three-pointer, after Fairfield Christian (25-3) closed to 49-48 with 5:50 to play.

Steven Carpenter scored 26 for the Knights.

VILLA ANGELA-ST. JOSEPH 67, TROY CHRISTIAN 36: Demonte Flannigan had 26 points and Duane Gibson Jr. scored 14 for Villa Angela (24-4) in a Division IV semifinal.

Spencer Thomas had nine points for the Eagles (26-3), who hit four of their first five three-pointers but finished 8 for 26.
