Huntington St. Joseph blitzes Buffalo, 72-45

BUFFALO, W.Va. -- Huntington St. Joe blanked Buffalo in the first quarter Friday and rolled to a 72-45 boys basketball victory.

St. Joe (4-0), led 25-0 after one period.

"It was shell shock," said Buffalo coach Chuck Elkins.

Nathan Hedrick's 20 points was high for St. Joe. Josh Pierson added 18 and Kyle Sheffield 10.

Buffalo (1-1) was led by Tyler Allen with 12 points.

St. Joe plays a Monday home game against Teays Valley Christian.

CHESAPEAKE 71, COAL GROVE 41: Nathan Copley connected for a game-high 24 points and Trent Saunders added 21 to lead the Panthers (3-2) past the Hornets.

Austin McMaster and Colin Kennedy each had 10 points for Chesapeake. The Panthers are back in action Tuesday when they meet Campbell Memorial in the Ironton Classic. Game time is 5 p.m.

Girls

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Huntington St. Joe's girls lost their opening game Friday in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic, a 30-team event being played in two gyms at Lexington Catholic.

Each team is guaranteed at least three games in the tournament that runs through Tuesday.

Clay County, Ky. (3-2) defeated St. Joe (1-1), 43-40, with a strong second half. St. Joe led, 24-20, at halftime.

Whitney Belle Jackson led Clay County with 18 points and Jordan Phillips added 10.

Sarah Sang for St. Joe had 20 points and nine rebounds.

St. Joe plays again at 5:45 p.m., Saturday.
