St. Joe dominates Teays Valley Christian in 84-35 victory
HUNTINGTON -- Josh Pierson's 23 points led balanced Huntington St. Joe in a Monday night, 84-35, boys basketball victory over Teays Valley Christian.
St. Joe's balance is one of the keys in a 5-0 season start.
Pierson, a sophomore guard, said he has been working hard on his jump shot and the extra work in the gym is paying dividends.
He made three 3-point shots and showed his quickness on drives to the basket.
"He is a great kid, and he has the potential to be an outstanding player," St. Joe coach Marshall Reynolds said. "He does a good job, and he is the quickest kid we have on our team."
Pierson was supported by Kyle Sheffield, who had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Aaron Williams with 16 points and a pair of 3-point field goals. Lance West and Parker Smith both scored eight.
Teays Valley Christian (3-6) had one player in double figures, C.J. LaRue with 11 points. Noah Osborne added eight for the Lions.
St. Joe jumped to a 26-11 lead after one quarter. At halftime, the Irish had a commanding 45-19 advantage.
The Irish have opened their season in the Class A ranks with some big victories including a win over Ohio Division IV defending champion Oak Hill and the East Fairmont Bees, a Class AAA opponent.
Reynolds said the team can still improve.
"I really thought we would be a little better than we are," he said. "We still get out of position in certain situations. We forget some important fundamentals on defense from time to time, but we work with them everyday on those things."
St. Joe is back at home at 7 p.m., Tuesday, against the Burch Bulldogs.
