St. Joe girls rout overmatched Hannan

Feb. 27, 2014 @ 12:26 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Two players already well over 1,000 points for their careers and one now closing in on the coveted total.

Senior guards Mychal Johnson and Griffin Dempsey surpassed that milestone well back in their careers at Huntington St. Joe. Senior Rachel Lee is now within reach of that elite statistic with a maximum of five games left as the Irish seek a sixth straight West Virginia Class A state title.

Lee poured in 32 points Wednesday night as St. Joe breezed past Hannan, 73-15, in a Class A Region IV, Section 2 semifinal game at the St. Joe gym. The southpaw scored 15 in the first period and 17 in the third. For the rest of the night, she and the fellow starting five took a seat on the bench as coach Shannon Lewis turned to the reserves early in the second and fourth periods.

St. Joe finally got to celebrate Senior Night on Wednesday and the six seniors got introduced to the crowd prior to tipoff. Lee, Mychal Johnson, Griffin Dempsey, Kara Jeffery, Caitlin Gale and Asia Petitte made the walk to center court where they received two photos -- one an individual picture and one featuring the six seniors -- along with other gifts.

Lewis had all seniors on the floor for the opening tip.

"It's bittersweet and emotional," Lee said, knowing the end is near. "We expect great things."

Lee had six three-pointers for the night.

"I was open, my teammates got me the ball and I shot it," she said. "I was on."

In the third period, Lee nailed seven of St. Joe's 10 baskets.

"We'd like to see her get it," Lewis said. "She can launch it."

St. Joe started the game on an 18-0 run before Hannan's Heather Ellis scored with 3:56 left in the first period. It was that kind of night for the Wildcats (3-17). They beat winless Hannan, 52-38, in a quarterfinal game Monday at Hannan. It was their first tournament win since 2004.

Unofficially, Hannan had 19 turnovers.

Lewis enjoyed enjoyed turning to the bench early in each half.

"The kids are so unselfish," he said. "Everyone gets to play and we move on."

St. Joe's next game will be Friday at home against Charleston Catholic. St. Joe and the Irish did not meet in the regular season.
