Spring Valley advances to finals

ONA -- After a shocking Saturday of defeats, Spring Valley's volleyball team is bouncing back.
Spring Valley held off a feisty Cabell Midland team Tuesday, 25-22, 25-19, 25-15, and advanced to play at 6 p.m., Wednesday, for the Class AAA, Region IV, Section 1 championship. Spring Valley (54-2-1) suffered its only losses of the season Saturday against Huntington High and Parkersburg at the Mountain State Athletic Conference tournament.
The Timberwolves will face Cabell Midland on Wednesday in the double-elimination finals.
"It's now a new season," Spring Valley coach Joy Bailey said. "There is a sense of urgency where we have to play well and focus on that."
Spring Valley scored five unanswered points against Cabell Midland at the end in each of the opening two sets to take a commanding lead.
The Timberwolves' Hannah Bailey had 10 kills and Cadara Cole 9 points.
Going into the postseason, Spring Valley was one of the favorites to win the state championship.
"They need to believe in themselves and work hard as a team," Bailey said. "Keep the intensity and leave it all on the court."
Cabell Midland defeated Huntington High 25-22, 25-14, 25-20 to advance to the championship. After a close win in the first set, the Knights took control of the match.
Cabell Midland's Tabitha Bias finished with 13 points and Caitlin Smith had nine kills. Huntington High's Ali Musick had 15 kills and Abby Steele had 11 points.
Knights coach Cindy Machmer said her team is feeling good about playing the Timberwolves.
"I think we proved we can play with them," Machmer said. "It gave our girls some confidence. It's going to be tough, but I know we can beat them. We have to dig, dive, and play better defense."
Huntington High advanced to play the Knights after defeating Hurricane 25-12, 25-15, 25-20. Musick led the Highlanders with 19 kills. Steele had 11 points and 18 assists while Ashley Byrd had eight points.
