Herd recruit leads W.Va. all-state team
HUNTINGTON -- Corey Bird, a Marshall University baseball recruit from Herbert Hoover High School, was elected as captain of the Class AA all-state first team for the second consecutive season by members of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
Bird played in the outfield and pitched for state champion Herbert Hoover.
The all-state second team included Wayne senior catcher Zach Cassidy, Poca junior infielder Cam Cottrill and Poca junior outfielder Jake Payne.
Wayne had Joey Williamson on the special mention list along with Dustin Conley and Brock Dalton from Chapmanville and Noah Frampton of Poca.
Kodie Bowen from Wayne received honorable mention recognition. Others in that group included Ricky Dean from Tolsia, Evan McClanahan from Poca, Tristan Thompson of Chapmanville and Joe May from Mingo Central.
Bird batted .467 with one double, six stolen bases, five runs and four RBIs in four state tournament games. He had 55 stolen bases in 35 games this season. His season pitching record was 5-1 with a 1.17 ERA, 49 strikeouts and nine walks for 30 innings.
Fairmont Senior junior outfielder Austin Norman was named as the all-state second team captain.
