St. Joe girls beat the buzzer

ATLANTA -- Mychal Johnson hit a running layup as the final buzzer sounded Thursday for the Huntington St. Joe girls basketball team in a 57-56 victory over Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy in the Peach State Holiday Classic.

St. Joe (6-0), the top-rated Class A team in West Virginia, plays again at 1 p.m., Friday. Southwest Atlanta Christian (8-1) is rated No. 1 in Georgia Class A.

Johnson led the Irish with 21 points and also had 10 rebounds. Rachel Lee also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Griffin Dempsey and Asia Petitte rounded out the Irish scoring with 16 and 10 respectively.

SOUTHWEST ATLANTA CHRISTIAN 15 7 17 17 -- 56: Brown 19, Daniels 15, Carter 10, Walker 4, Jones 3, Anthony 3, Carter 2.

HUNTINGTON ST. JOE 14 12 13 18 -- 57: Dempsey 16, Johnson 21, Lee 10, Petitte 10.

IRONTON 54, HIALEAH GARDENS 21: The Fighting Tigers (6-3) won their Thursday game in the Hialeah Gardens High School Christmas Tournament. Ironton plays Miami West for the championship at 3 p.m., Friday.

CHESAPEAKE 67, SYMMES VALLEY 52: Chesapeake got 22 points and five steals from Sydnee Hall on the way to the seventh win of the season for the Panthers.

Chesapeake (7-2) also got 20 points and eight rebounds from Jordan Porter, along with 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals from Kelsey Curry.

Symmes Valley (4-7) was led by Kayli Hunt and Gracie Waddell with 16 and 12 points respectively.

HIALEAH GARDENS 74, IRONTON 59: Adrian Gonzalez pumped in 28 to lead the Gladiators in a Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic game Thursday at Ronald Reagan/Doral High School in Miami, Fla.

Ironton had Zac Carter with 24 points and Trey Fletcher with 22.

The Fighting Tigers (5-1) play again at 1:30 p.m., Friday.

COAL GROVE TOURNAMENT: Girls and boys games are on tap Friday in the Dr. Richard Paulus Heart of Champions Classic at Coal Grove.

Ironton St. Joe and Coal Grove meet in a 5 p.m. girls game.

Boys games are Ironton St. Joe against Raceland at 6:30 p.m. and Greenup County meeting Coal Grove at about 8 p.m.
