HHS wrestlers remain dominant
HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High's wrestling team went 3-1 against four of Virginia's top teams Saturday in the 11th annual Marines.com Battlefield Duals at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, Va.
The Highlanders, ranked No. 1 in Class AAA in West Virginia, beat Christiansburg (44-22), Forest Park (36-26) and Floyd E. Kellam (54-10) along with Georgetown Prep (41-30) in pool matches. Christiansburg is No. 1 in Class AA in Virginia. Forest Park is seventh and Kellam eighth in Class AAA.
The showing got Huntington at shot at Colonial Forge in the championship match. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in Class AAA, beat the Highlanders, 34-28. They went 4-0 in their pool matches.
In the championship match, each team won seven matches. Action began at 170 pounds and the Eagles won four of the first five. The Highlanders made their charge with wins at 120, 126, 132, 138 and 145 to take the lead. Colonial Forge won the final two matches and the crown.
This is the second straight year Colonial Forge and Huntington High have finished first and second.
The Highlanders had four wrestlers go undefeated. Chase Childers was 5-0 at 126, Cody Shepherd 3-0 at 132, Justin Arthur 4-0 at 145 and Nigale Cabell 5-0 at 122. Logan Grass (103), Jarred Simpkins (120) and Paden Christian (152) each went 4-1.
Huntington's back in action Wednesday night at Cabell Midland. The dual between the Cabell County rivals starts at 6 p.m.
JACKSON COUNTY INVITATIONAL: Cabell Midland finished third with 127.50 points. Ripley won with 256.50.
For the Knights, Logan Adkins was runner-up at 106 and Josh Miller was runner-up at 145.
In consolation matches, Cabell Midland winners were Adam Whittmore (126), Bryce Smith (132), Jared Bradley (195) and Nathan Jefferson (220). Aaron Scarr was fourth at 138.
NITRO PAT VANCE INVITATIONAL: Winfield performed well enough in the finals to win the 43rd Pat Vance Invitational at Nitro High School. The Generals had 222.50 points to 214.50 for runner-up George Washington. The Pat Vance title is the first team win in school history for Winfield.
