Johnson scores 1,000th point in St. Joe victory

HUNTINGTON -- Huntington St. Joe junior Mychal Johnson netted the 1,000th point of her career while leading the Class A top-ranked Irish to a 73-48 girls basketball road win Tuesday at No. 5 Parkersburg Catholic.

Johnson accomplished the feat when she drained a 3-pointer with 3:41 left in the second quarter to put St. Joe ahead 29-15.

The shot came as Parkersburg Catholic's student section chanted "Roll Tide" at Johnson in mockery of the Alabama Crimson Tide defeating Notre Dame on Monday in the BCS national championship football game.

Johnson verbally committed to Notre Dame's women's basketball program in November.

"The whole game it was 'Roll Tide,'" Johnson said. "That just made us want to beat them, too. It was special, too, because Mychelle (Mychal's sister) passed it to me. That, and I'm glad I scored my 1,000th against them."

After leading 32-23 at halftime, the Irish started each of the third and fourth quarters with 10-2 runs to push the lead beyond the 20-point mark.

The game started out as a tight affair as Parkersburg Catholic stayed with the Irish and trailed by just two points at the end of the first quarter.

The Irish started to apply pressure in the second period and stretch the lead to 14 on Johnson's milestone 3-pointer before the Crusaders rallied to close the gap to 32-23 at the half.

Asia Petitte had 13 points for St. Joe (9-1) while Rachel Lee added 12 in the win.

Leah Hughes led Parkersburg Catholic (6-4) with 14 points.
