Post play leads HHS past Winfield

Jan. 18, 2013 @ 12:07 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High post player Dominique Gibson's night started with a wraparound pass to post player Ericka Budd for a layup.

The play got both into rhythm early and each dominated the paint as the Highlanders earned an easy 68-37 win over Winfield on Thursday night at Huntington High School.

"Domino (Gibson) relaxed tonight and did a good job," Lonnie Lucas said. "Her and Ericka were fighting for rebounds and everyone was playing how they can play, which is good to see."

Both Gibson and Budd finished with 10 points in the contest, but it was their work on the glass that was the most impressive aspect in the game.

The duo combined for 27 rebounds in the game -- 19 by Gibson -- while leading the Highlanders to a 29-8 rebounding edge at halftime.

The Highlanders' grit down low not only led to easy baskets underneath, but also intimidated the Generals early on and kept Winfield's players from driving to the basket.

The result was a one-dimensional Winfield offense that was limited to perimeter shots and one shot per possession.

As a result, the Highlanders opened up a double-digit lead after one quarter and raced to a 34-14 halftime advantage.

Gibson's 10-point, 19-rebound effort included nine offensive rebounds, which the Highlanders needed after a night where the team struggled shooting from the outside.

Huntington High was just 2-of-12 from 3-point range, but finished with 22 second-chance points in the contest. The Highlanders owned a 53-27 advantage on the glass.

"They are starting to find each other and figure out each other a little bit," Lucas said. "Tonight, Domino sort of led the charge."

While Gibson stepped up all facets of her game, Kiana Evans continued her scoring onslaught for the Highlanders.

She finished with 23 points and seven rebounds with many of the points coming in transition off of steals.

Winfield was led by Morgan Eggleton, who finished with nine points. Mara Rhoades added seven points and six rebounds.
