Fairland girls win, remain undefeated

Jan. 22, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

BERLIN, Ohio -- Fairland outscored Clinton-Massie 18-7 in the fourth period Monday to escape with a 60-47 girls basketball victory in the Classic in the Country Challenge at Berlin Hiland High School.

The three-day tournament began Friday and featured 20 games.

"We got stops and hit some shots," Fairland coach Jon Buchanan said of the fourth-quarter turnaround. "It's going to help our kids out when we get to postseason. We were in a big environment and handled it well."

Chandler Fulks paced the Lady Dragons (13-0) with a game-high 20 points. Terra Stapleton, a 6-foot-5 junior center who's made a verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota, finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for another double-double.

Kasey Uetrecht led Clinton-Massie (13-4) with 14 points. Mary Moyer finished with 10. The Falcons have a major void in the lineup as top 25 player Sydney Brackemyre, a junior, injured her ACL recently in late December in a game against Wilmington and is out for the season. She's being recruited by several major universities.

Fairland returns to action Thursday at Rock Hill. On Saturday, the Lady Dragons take on Ashland at 2 p.m. at Ironton's Conley Center.
