Ellis leads Midland girls to win over Hurricane, 61-47

Feb. 01, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HURRICANE -- Alex Ellis connected on three three-pointers in the third period to spark a Cabell Midland run and power the Knights to a 61-47 victory over Hurricane on Thursday night.

"She got them when we needed them," Knights coach Matt Adkins said.

Cabell Midland (11-5) led 29-23 at halftime. The Ellis bombs and three baskets from in close by Sierra Jordan helped the Knights build a 50-36 lead after three periods and spoil Senior Night for the Redskins.

"We made some adjustments at halftime," Adkins said. "We denied them the over the top pass and stepped up play on our end."

Jordan led Cabell Midland with 16 points. Emily Harden added 12 with eight coming in the first period. The teams were tied at 12-12 after eight minutes.

"We try to run the high-low," Adkins said. "Emily's play in the first period was huge."

Abby Watson paced Hurricane with 15 points. Audrey Barber added 12 and Taneisha Sturdavent 10. The Redskins (5-12) have lost seven in a row. Turnovers again were an issue as they had 21.

Adkins said he liked the way his team responded in the second half. The Knights were coming off emotional home losses to rivals Spring Valley (56-54) and Huntington High (69-55).

"I was worried about a hangover," Adkins said. "We played good ball (against Spring Valley) and didn't get it done. I took the blame for that. I don't know what happened against Huntington High. I'm proud of the way the girls played tonight."

Cabell Midland now turns its attention to a busy stretch. The Knights visit Point Pleasant on Friday. Next week, they travel to South Charleston on Monday, Riverside on Wednesday and St. Albans on Friday.

Jordan notched 12 of her 16 points in the second half.

"She's a great player," Adkins said. "We've got excellent post play, a good 1-2 punch (Jordan and Emily Pitkin)."

Jordan's explanation went this way: "We hustled more."

Hurricane's held Senior Night ceremonies at halftime. Brooke Crompton and Callie McClanahan were introduced to the crowd and received some parting gifts.

Hurricane returns to action Monday at Winfield.
