Ironton boys knock out Chillicothe Zane Trace
ATHENS, Ohio -- Ironton downed Chillicothe Zane Trace, 69-45, in the Ohio Division III boys basketball district tournament finals Friday in the Ohio University Convocation Center.
All-Southeastern District first team selection Trey Fletcher led the Fighting Tigers with 24 points and Zac Carter, the district player of the year, scored 20. Trevor White, an all-district second team pick, followed with 11.
Ironton assumed a 32-15 lead midway through the second quarter and was in control.
"We played good sustained defense the whole game," said Ironton coach Mark LaFon, the district coach of the year, "It took us a while to get going on offense."
Tyler Hinty scored 16 for the Pioneers, including 11 in the first quarter.
The Fighting Tigers clamped down on Hinty's perimeter shooting after his early burst "and we did a good job on that," LaFon said.
Zane Trace season scoring leader Wes Beam averaging 15 per game was limited to 10.
Ironton, 21-2 with a 14-game win streak, returns to the Convocation Center to play Martins Ferry at 6:15 p.m., Wednesday, in the regional semifinals
Martins Ferry beat Sugarcreek Garaway in the district finals at Ohio University-Belmont, 56-48.
