Fairland boys, girls take sectional titles

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- Fairland's girls and boys won Division II Southeast sectional cross country titles Saturday at Rio Grande University.

For the girls, the Dragons finished with 45 points, one better than runner-up Athens.

Fairland had five runners in the top 15 and Athens had four.

Shanan Ashton led the Dragons, placing sixth in 20:37.44. Megan Ashton was seventh, 20:37.54; Sydney Pettit ninth, 20:44.22; Taylor Perry 11th, 20:48.38; and Jessica Price, 12th, 21:04.24. Mariah Chaffin was 24th and Sarah Warnock 25th.

For Athens, freshman Emily Cass won the 5K race in 19:27.13. Athens also had runners place fifth, 10th, 14th and 16th.

Next stop for Fairland is the regional Saturday, Oct. 27, at Pickerington.

In Division III, Reedsville Eastern won with 25 points. For the champs, Taylor Palmer was first and Chantel Barnhart second. Ironton's Ariel Schweickart placed 12th and qualified for this Saturday's regional at Pickerington.

In the boys race, Fairland survived another close call. The Dragons won with 52 points and Sheridan took second with 55.

Raine Wireman led Fairland, taking second in 16:53.18. Other placers for the Dragons were Chad McComas, fifth, 17:26.73; Logan Rowe, seventh, 17:29.55; Josh Sifford, 18th, 18:02.63; and Conner Flynn, 20th, 18:12.60. Taylor Lewis (24th) and Adam Taylor (25th) rounded out the Fairland squad.

Sheridan's Matt Bromley won in 16:25.30. Sheridan's other four runners placed eighth, 10th, 15th and 21st.

In Division III, Rock Hill took third with 83 points. Aaron Dalton was fifth, Seth Miller eighth, Austin Smith 21st, Alston Haas 22nd and Tim Secoy 27th. Brandon Burditt (39th) and Dustin Akers (53rd) round out the Rock Hill team.

Sectional qualifiers move on on to the district meet Saturday, Oct. 27, at Pickerington.
