Huntington High stumbles

Nov. 03, 2012 @ 12:36 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The night started bad and didn't get any better for Huntington High's football team.

Capital scored the first 21 points of the game before the Highlanders had their initial first down and the Cougars cruised to a 48-18 win Friday on Senior Night for Huntington High at Bob Sang Field on Friday night.

"Bottom line is this," Huntington High coach Billy Seals said. "We got our butts kicked tonight. I got out-coached. I don't care to say that. I got out-coached. It's my fault."

The Highlanders turned the ball over four times, including three in the first half, to lead to their demise.

Class AAA 10th-rated Capital (7-3) forged a large lead early behind dominance in all three phases of the game, and the Highlanders couldn't overcome the deficit as the team suffered a lopsided regular-season ending loss. The Highlanders, who were rated third in the state, are 8-2.

Huntington High's defense had been its strength all season, allowing the fewest points in all of Class AAA. However, the Cougars had no such trouble as the balanced attack gashed through the Highlanders from the game's onset.

Capital finished with 392 yards in the game, 192 rushing and 200 passing.

"Don't blame our kids whatsoever," Seals said. "I didn't get the job done on the defensive side of the ball. You can look and we'd given up 79 points in nine games and give up 48 tonight."

Capital freshman quarterback Tyrhee Pratt finished 12 of 20 passing for 200 yards and three touchdowns -- two to his brother Cliff Pratt. He also threw two interceptions.

"He doesn't know he's a ninth-grader, I don't think," Capital coach Jon Carpenter said. "He does things he shouldn't be doing, that's for sure."

James Richmond finished with 121 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns for the Cougars, who won their third-straight contest to end the regular season.

Missed tackles and third-down conversions were the Highlanders' bugaboo.

"They exploited us a little bit with some speed and some cut-back alleys," Seals said.

Huntington High got nothing going in the first half offensively, amassing just 42 yards while turning the ball over three times.

After Capital's Tyrell Davis caught a deflected pass from Tyrhee Pratt in the back of the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown to put the Cougars up 6-0, the Highlanders gave the ball back on the next play from scrimmage when Paden Christian fumbled after an 18-yard pass completion.

The Cougars got a 14-yard run on third-and-14 from Tyrhee Pratt to keep the drive alive, and Kashaun Haley scored untouched on a 4-yard run on the next play for a 14-0 lead.

Capital's defense continued its strong start, picking off Huntington High quarterback Mark Shaver two plays later.

On third-and-goal from the 22-yard line, Tyrhee Pratt connected with Cliff Pratt for a 22-yard touchdown to make it a three-score game.

"It makes it easy to win football games when your defense plays like that," Carpenter said. "That defensive front is really playing well right now, and that's what we're going to hang our hat on."

The Highlanders' lone points of the half came on Capital's next series as Payton Johnson intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

Huntington High had a chance to cut into the lead before the end of the half, but Shaver's second interception ended the threat.
