Knights pull away in 2nd half, 52-20

Nov. 10, 2012 @ 12:30 AM

ONA -- Cabell Midland's running game produced as expected. What Knights coach Luke Salmons liked is the way his defense contained Oak Hill's running game from its wishbone formation.

Cabell Midland, ranked No. 1 in Class AAA and No. 1 seed for the playoffs, limited the Red Devils to one sustained scoring drive and got three touchdowns each from David Gaydosz and Lowell Farley to roll to a 52-20 win in first-round action Friday night at Cabell Midland.

"We did a good job. We didn't tackle well at times, but we did OK," Salmons said. "We had just a week to get ready. Jones (Jalen Jones) is a good back. You had to wrap him up."

Gaydosz ripped off scoring runs of 51 yards in the first period and 60 and 46 in the second to help the Knights take a 28-12 lead at halftime. Farley added a 3-yard TD run in the second period, a 1-yarder in the third and 25-yarder in the fourth to cap his productive night.

Gaydosz finished with 264 yards on 15 carries, Kasey Thomas added 119 on 13 and Farley totaled 71 on 12. Thomas started the game at quarterback, but moved to winback and Coy Pettit took over calling signals on the home team's third possession in the first period.

"Coy understands the offense and gave us a chance to solidify what we do," Salmons said. "We made the move for that reason."

On defense, Oak Hill had 208 yards rushing with junior Jalen Jones leading the way with 148 on 26 carries.

The No. 16 Red Devils (7-4) had their one long drive in the second period when they went 80 yards in 14 plays and used nearly seven minutes.

"They got on us pretty good," Knights linebacker Nick Boone said of the halftime chat between coaches and defensive players. "We made some adjustments at halftime. We stayed home and did our assignments. They're a No. 16 seed, but they gave us a challenge. We spent a lot of time on defense getting ready."

For the Red Devils, this was their first season in Class AAA. Coach Eddie Souk knew his team faced a major challenge.

"They're a good football team. They deserve what they got," Souk said. "We tried to control the ball, but we shot ourselves in the foot in the first quarter and third quarter. We made a pretty good run. We're one of the smallest Class AAA schools. We made a statement. We played hard."

Gaydosz is the heralded transfer from Winfield and this made his first playoff win.

"It's feels good, but I want to turn it into my first state championship," he said.

Next up for the Knights (11-0) is No. 8 Spring Valley, which beat No. 9 Wheeling Park, 31-7, Friday at Spring Valley. The two teams met in the season opener at Cabell Midland and the Knights won, 21-13.

Making the switch from quarterback to wingback didn't bother Thomas.

"It doesn't matter where I play," he said. "I'm a run-first guy. Wing is my home."

Cabell Midland dispensed with the fireworks Friday night, but fans cranked up the noise with cowbells and horns and waved white towels as well.
