Ironton improves to 5-0
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Undefeated Ironton (5-0) rolled past Portsmouth, 61-34, on Friday.
The teams met for the 118th time in a long rivalry Ironton now leads, 56-54-8.
Ironton bolted to a 21-0 first-quarter lead on a pair of Patrick Lewis touchdown runs of 66 and 18 yards, and a 66-yard scoring reception by Trevor White from Tanner Dutey.
The Trojans (1-4) made costly mistakes early — an interception set up one of the Lewis touchdowns and a lost fumble led to White’s touchdown.
White ran 3 yards for a touchdown and Dion Brown scored on a 29-yard pass from Dutey, stretching the lead to 35-0 before Portsmouth scored, and the Fighting Tigers led, 35-7, at halftime.
Ironton backup quarterback Tristan Cox scored on a 1-yard sneak before Portsmouth scored twice to get within 41-20 after three periods.
Lewis, Dutey and Matt Thomas ran for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
