MSAC names Wellman player of year

HUNTINGTON -- Versatile Spring Valley senior pitcher, third baseman and first baseman Elijah Wellman was chosen as the Mountain State Athletic Conference baseball player of the year.

Jim Hensley from Spring Valley and Brian Sutphin of Hurricane shared coach of the year honors.

MSAC champion Cabell Midland had two members of the all-conference first team -- junior pitcher Tyler Hayes and junior utility selection Seth Kinker.

Huntington High junior infielder Joey Mundy was also on the first unit with Hurricane players Riley Metz (senior pitcher), Connor Adams (senior outfielder) and junior infielder (Austin Hensley).

All-MSAC second team selections included Huntington High junior pitcher Stephen Holland and Spring Valley junior infielder Colby Webb.

Hurricane had junior pitcher J.T. Rogoszewski, sophomore utility player Trey Dawson and sophomore catcher Tate Brock on the second team with Winfield senior designated hitter Josh Bumgarner.

Special honorable mention recognition went to Huntington High players Hunter Smith, Nate Haikal and Ronnie Musick; Taylor Kuhn from Cabell Midland; and Winfield players Brandon Wright and Bear Bellomy.

Players on the honorable mention list included Jack Brunetti from Huntington High, Kaleb Frye from Spring Valley, Alexander Dunham of Hurricane and Jonah Sneeringer from Winfield.
