HHS wrestlers place in Pa.

Huntington High had four wrestlers place in the Powerade Christmas wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday at Canon-McMillian High School in Canonsburg, Pa.

Logan Grass was fifth at 106 pounds, Jordan Allen seventh at 120, Austin Budd sixth at 220 and Nigale Cabell fourth at heavyweight. The Highlanders, defending West Virginia Class AAA champion, wound up 12th with 88.5 points in one of the top in-season tournaments in the country.

Franklin Regional came in the favorite and lived up to the billing, winning with 236.5 points. Franklin Regional is the first WPIAL team to win this event since 2010.

Grass defeated Daniel Planta of St. Paul's Md., 5-0. Allen prevailed over Ryan Friedman of St. Paul's, 3-2. Budd lost his first match Friday, but came back to reach the podium. Belle Vernon's Patrick Mayernik beat Budd in the place match.

At heavyweight, Cabell got fourth thanks to a 2-1 win over Austin Buttry of Chestnut Ridge.

Huntington's next tournament is the Marines.com Battlefield Duals scheduled on Friday-Saturday at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, Va.

In Wheeling, Parkersburg South went 4-0 Saturday and won the Wheeling Park Duals at WesBanco Arena. Parkersburg placed second. Point Pleasant was sixth and Cabell Midland 16th in the 25-team event.

Next weekend, area teams will see action in either the Pat Vance Invitational at Nitro or West Virginia Duals in Parkersburg.
