Pioneers polish off Skyhawks
WAYNE -- For the first time in more than two years, Wayne's football team trailed on the scoreboard.
That lasted for just more than three minutes Friday night.
The Pioneers rolled up 543 yards of total offense and held Scott scoreless after the first quarter as Wayne defeated the visiting Skyhawks, 55-10 on Homecoming at Pioneer Field.
Mason Hodge ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries while Nathan Spurlock added two touchdowns rushing. Cody Stiltner had touchdowns receiving and rushing as No. 1 Wayne ran for 433 yards in its 29th consecutive win.
"I thought our offensive line did a nice job," Wayne coach Tom Harmon said. "I thought those guys did a good job getting a push. Our backs hit in the right place and it seemed more rhythmic than it had all year.
'Those guys' are offensive linemen Ryan Baumgardner, J.C. Maynard, Matt Queen, Colin Kelley and Alex Elkins. Collectively, the Pioneers had just one negative yardage play on 48 rush attempts.
Scott (3-4) got on the board first, behind the running of Cameron Loftus and Bo Jeffrey. The Skyhawks were forced to settle for a 33-yard field goal by Dezmond Cordero-Lopez.
It was the first time Wayne (6-0) had trailed in a game since Oct. 7, 2011, also against Scott. The streak had lasted more than 1,300 minutes of game action.
Harmon wasn't upset to see it end as long as his team got the win.
"I'm so thankful that they kicked a field goal there and didn't go for it and not get it," Harmon said. "Anybody that expects us to be ahead in every game every week has unrealistic expectations on high school kids. We took the ball right back down the field and scored. It really wasn't that big a deal. We just want to win."
Wayne hit the Skyhawks with a knockout punch late in the second quarter, scoring on two Hodge runs and a back-breaking 35-yard touchdown pass from Ferguson to Stiltner just before the half.
Scott scored its lone touchdown on a 91-yard kickoff return by freshman Garrett Roberts. Steven Perry and Josh Mitts also found the endzone for Wayne.
Danielle Perry was named the 66th Miss Pioneer at halftime.
Wayne will play at Herbert Hoover next Friday night.
