Hurricane beats Midland in Grid-O-Rama
CHARLESTON -- Hurricane's Terrell Martin was so eager to get things started in the Mountain State Athletic Conference Grid-O-Rama at Laidley Field he nearly ran out of his shoes.
Martin led Hurricane to a 28-14 win over Cabell Midland in the two quarter scrimmage.
The state track and field champ in last years 200 and 400 meters capitalized on his blazing speed early. It only took Martin two carries to prove that he was the fastest man on the field by far.
On the first play of the game, Martin took a carry and bolted down the left sidelines untouched for a stupendous 70-yard touchdown run. After a missed extra-point Hurricane led 6-0.
But that was just the beginning for Martin. On his second carry he darted up the middle practically untouched again for a 45-yard score. In just two carries Martin had accounted for two touchdowns and 115 yards rushing.
With just seconds remaining in the first quarter, Martin took a short pass from quarterback Luke Briggs and dashed up the field for a jaw-dropping 77-yard touchdown reception.
That made three touches and three touchdowns for Martin. This senior has always been noted for his quickness, but on this day he proved to be untouchable. Martin had 192 yards combined on the three plays.
Hurricane surged out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Cabell Midland had no answer for Martin on defense and its offense failed to get things rolling.
The Knights came alive at the start of the second quarter when junior running back Tyler Anderson broke off a 70-yard touchdown run. This cut the deficit to 21-7 and gave Cabell Midland some well needed confidence.
Cabell Midland quarterback Tyler Bartley looked solid, scrambling around for positive yardage and displaying his arm strength by firing the ball downfield.
On the final play of the game, Bartley hit Tyler Sansom on a screen-pass that turned into a 22-yard touchdown. The Knights didn't have the beginning they envisioned, but they managed to finish strong.
