Cox leads Ironton over Amanda-Clearcreek

Sep. 14, 2013 @ 01:11 AM

IRONTON -- Quarterback Tristan Cox scored both Ironton touchdowns Friday in a 14-7 football defeat of Amanda-Clearcreek at Tanks Memorial Stadium.

Ironton (2-1) drove 97 yards for a touchdown that tied the score, 7-7, late in the third quarter, then needed to move only 1 yard for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to lead, 14-7.

Amanda-Clearcreek (1-2) began the second half with a 7-0 lead and promptly pinned Ironton deep with a punt to the 3-yard line.

Ironton moved out of danger into Amanda-Clearcreek territory and Desmond Young's dive on fourth down gave the Fighting Tigers a first down at the Aces' 15. Derik Berry's run was good for another first down at the 3 and Cox capped the 97-yard drive that consumed more than eight minutes of game time with a 1-yard touchdown run.

On the ensuing possession Amanda-Clearcreek's punt from deep in its own end was blocked by Joe Bowling of the Fighting Tigers and the ball rolled out of bounds at the 1. Cox took it in again on a quarterback sneak.

Hunter Klaiber's two extra point kicks game Ironton a 14-7 lead with 10:57 remaining.

Amanda-Clearcreek defensive back Devon Boyer's interception led to a second quarter score.

The Aces drove after the turnover and converted with Dusty Riffle's 2-yard touchdown run and a Christian Meadows extra point kick to lead 7-0 with 4:52 left before halftime.

The teams didn't generate much offensively in the first two quarters. Ironton's best gainer of the first half was a 25-yard run by Cox.

Meadows of the Aces missed a long field goal attempt in the first quarter. Ironton had a Jake Long touchdown reception in the opening period negated by a holding penalty.

The Fighting Tigers play next week at Ashland, which won Friday against Russell, 7-6.
