Wayne demolishes Ravenswood, 57-6

Sep. 21, 2013 @ 12:40 AM

WAYNE -- It didn't take long for Wayne to shake a sluggish first half against visiting Ravenswood.

The Pioneers (3-0) scored 15 points in the first two minutes of the third quarter Friday night, part of a 30-point period, en route to a 57-6 victory against the Red Devils (2-1).

For the second straight game, Wayne returned the opening kickoff of the second half untouched for a touchdown. Sophomore Cody Stiltner fielded the ball on his own 10-yard line and raced straight up the middle of the field 90-yards to the end zone.

Ravenswood, ranked No. 3 in Class AA, fumbled on its first play of the second half, and two plays later, Stiltner scored again taking a lateral bubble screen 25 yards for a score.

The Pioneers, ranked No. 7 in AA, ran away by scoring 38 unanswered points in the second half.

"Our offensive line as a group started making a difference as the game went along," Wayne coach Tom Harmon said. "I didn't think they got tired, I thought they got in there and fought. Our backs ran a little bit harder."

While the offense put up big numbers, the Pioneer defense continued to be impressive in the early season. Ravenswood managed just 52 yards rushing on 39 attempts. For the season, Wayne is giving up just more than one yard per carry.

"The bulk of our time in-season is spent on trying to take away what the other teams do best, especially defensively," Harmon said. "Traditionally we do a pretty good job of that. It's half the football game, and something you have to bring every week."

The Pioneers have outscored their first three opponents 148-13.

Ravenswood avoided the shutout just before halftime, when quarterback Heath Burgess threw a jump ball to 6-foot-5 receiver Issac Crow, who caught it, avoided a defender, and raced 90 yards for a score.

The longest Red Devil run of the night came late in the fourth quarter, when backup quarterback Joonathan Crow dropped the snap, picked it up and gained 17 yards.

That one effort made him Ravenswood's leading rusher on the night.

Wayne plays host to unbeaten Sissonville next week. The Indians were ranked No. 2 entering this weekend, and picked up a 22-20 win over Scott.
