Pioneers put hurt on Poca

Oct. 26, 2013 @ 12:56 AM

POCA, W.Va. — Any thoughts that unbeaten Wayne's football team might overlook Poca lasted less than a quarter.

The Class AA No. 1 Pioneers flew out to a 48-7 halftime lead Friday night and dispatched the host Dots, 54-27, at O. O. White Stadium.

Junior quarterback Grant Ferguson put on an aerial display, throwing for 173 yards and four touchdowns in less than one half of action.

"Grant is the type of player that makes those around him better," Wayne coach Tom Harmon said. "As we gain experience, things start to click."

Ferguson completed passes to five different players. Kurt Langdon-Arthur returned from injury to catch two passes for 66 yards and two scores, including a 58-yard scoring strike. Cody Stiltner had 63 yards on two catches and a 55-yard touchdown grab.

In all, Wayne (8-0) had 17 ball carriers and 20 players handle the football. Every Pioneer that dressed played. Poca did not get a first down until the second quarter, and was down 35-0 at the time.

The Wayne reserves played two and a half quarters and forced two Dot turnovers.

"We do have a next guy up mentality with things," Harmon said. "The expectations stay the same. We got a little deeper tonight than usual but still had good production."

Mason Hodge had just three carries, but ran for 45 yards and a touchdown, while also catching a 12-yard scoring pass. Nathan Spurlock led the Pioneers' ground game with 75 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Poca, who played its starters the entire game, had four touchdowns from Levi Clendenin, two receiving and two rushing. Justin Stewart led the Dots (1-7) with 71 yards on 12 carries.

Wayne has scored more than 50 points against Poca in each of the last six meetings.

The Pioneers have now won 31-straight games. Wayne will play host to Chapmanville next Friday for Senior Night. The Pioneer senior class is 43-5.
