Magnolia's Elliot is third Blue Eagle to be selected all-state captain
NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. -- Plenty was expected out of Magnolia and senior Kyle Elliott when the 2013 high school baseball season started.
Playing in their first season in West Virginia Class A with Elliott, an all-state player in the AA ranks a season ago, the Blue Eagles were one of the preseason favorites to win it all. While they came up two runs short -- falling 9-8 to first-time champion Charleston Catholic in the state title game -- Elliott helped the Blue Eagles pull off a rare all-state feat.
Elliott, who was 8-1 with five saves and an ERA of .089 on the mound and hit .437 with five home runs and 42 RBIs, was named as the captain of the Class A all-state baseball team announced by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
He was the third Magnolia player to be honored in a major sport, as classmates Steven Rogalski (football) and Mark Winters (boys basketball) were also selected during the school year as Class A all-state captains.
All-state special mention selections included Stephen Jenkins from Huntington St. Joe, Tyler Jenkins of Hannan, Wesley Harrison of Wahama, Levi Jordan from Buffalo, Braden Griffin from Man and Jordan Mounts from Tug Valley.
Honorable mention players included Torin Walters of Huntington St. Joe, Dakota Sisk from Wahama, Matt Randolph from Hannan, Noah Maynard and Cayce Mullins from Man and Aaron Lewis of Buffalo.
