Burcham, Knights win region
TORNADO, W.Va. -- Cabell Midland's boys dominated the competition Thursday in the Class AAA, Region IV cross country meet at Meadowbrook Park.
Cabell Midland runners took seven of the first eight places, led by Jacob Burhcam's fourth consecutive region title, and won with 17 points. Runner-up Hurricane was second with 78 points and Huntington High took third place with 83 points.
Hurricane won the girls team championship with 29 points and had Tori Dent as the individual winner. Cabell Midland's girls were second with 48 points followed by Winfield with 56 points.
Cabell Midland coach Chris Parsons said Region IV qualifiers for the state meet the Knights host Oct. 27 are the top three boys and girls teams along with the first 10 individual finishers.
"We're ready to go," Parsons said.
Burcham cruised to victory in the boys 5K run with a time of 15 minutes, 18.20 seconds that obliterated the course record, Parsons said.
Avery Campbell from Cabell Midland placed second (16:15.90) and Mason Dino of the Knights was third (16:25.60).
Fourth-place Jack McGree from Huntington High (16:26.30) was followed at the finish by four more Cabell Midland runners -- Andrew Short (16:31.10), Jeremy Waugh (16:33.00), Brian Lawhon (16:37.10) and Nick Salmons (16:41.30).
Chandler Smith (16:55.00) and Sam Smith (17:13.70) from Huntington High placed ninth and 12th respectively.
Spring Valley individual runners included Josh Billiups (18:59.70) and Nick Mitchell (19:34.60).
Dent's winning time for the 5K girls run was 18:47.90. Winfield had Brittney McMillion in second place (19:11.30) and Jorden Thornton from Cabell Midland was third (19:22.20).
Hurricane's girls also had Emily Schwendiman (19:23.90) in fourth place. Rachael Englund (19:29.50) from Winfield was fifth followed by Joie Johnston (19:45.00) from Hurricane and Point Pleasant individual entry Andrea Porter (20:08.60).
Cabell Midland had Kelsey Dillon (20:14.50) in eighth place, Baylee Summers (20:15.00) from Hurricane was ninth and Hannah Morgan (20:22.10) for the Midland Knights placed 10th.
Huntington High had Audrey McFarland (22:03.57) and Savannah MacGregor (22:20.50) as its lead runners.
Spring Valley individual entries included Kayla Criswell (21:13.40) and Shelby Bellomy (22:33.12).
