Winfield girls soccer in state final for third year
CHARLESTON -- The Winfield Generals girls soccer team is in the WVSSAC Class AAA final for the third straight year, and hope that their third go will be the charm that results in a title.
The Generals defeated Buckhannon Upshur, 3-0, in the semifinals Tuesday, and will face George Washington for the state championship Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Winfield was the runner-up in 2010 state tournament, and again in the 2011 final, falling last year to Morgantown in a match that came down to penalty kicks.
George Washington defeated Morgantown in overtime Tuesday, 2-1, to set up Wednesday's final.
Winfield and George Washington last met on the Generals' home pitch on Oct. 4. Winfield won the match 4-1.
On the boys side, the Hurricane Redskins had not tasted defeat all season, and still haven't, moving easily past Hedgesville, 4-0, Tuesday evening to advance to the state final.
Hurricane will take on the Parkersburg Big Reds, who defeated George Washington, 1-0. The game will take place about 45 minutes after the girls final.
Parkersburg is seeking its seventh state final.
The state tournament usually takes place in Beckley, but was pushed back a week and moved to Charleston because of weather problems caused by Hurricane Sandy.
