G. Washington ruling the pool

The Herald-Dispatch

MORGANTOWN - George Washington's dominance in Mountain State high school swimming continues for another year.

The Patriots swept the championships in the West Virginia High School Championships held Thursday and Friday at the West Virginia University Natatorium. The boys racked up 237 points to extend their streak to five in row. Notre Dame was second with 178. The girls had 205 points to 173 for runner-up Morgantown. The Patriots extended that title run to three years.

The top six qualifiers from Thursday's preliminaries swam in Friday's championship finals in the all-class meet. The top six scores in each divison made All-State.

Matt Nelson was George Washington's lone individual winner Friday. He opened the morning session with a win in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.68). The Patriots got their other title in the 200 free relay. David Nason, Majester Abdul-Jalil, Nelson and Nick Peyatte won in a state-record time of 1.38.13, bettering the mark they set in Thursday's session. After that, the Patriots relied on their depth to take home the championship under first-year coach Kaycee McCormick.

In the afternoon, the girls took to the water. George Washington got three wins and again used its depth to outdistance the field. The Patriots started with a win in the 200 medley relay and wrapped up the long day with a victory in the 400 free relay. Emily Hageboeck got their individual title, winning the 100 breaststroke.
