November 14, 2012 @ 11:30 PM

HUNTINGTON -- Laura Der from Marshall's Thundering Herd was an All-Conference USA first team volleyball selection by the league's head coaches.

Jillian Shemanski from Marshall was on the C-USA All-Freshman Team.

They lead No. 6 seed Marshall (18-12 overall, 8-8 conference) against No. 3 seed UCF (14-14, 11-5) in a C-USA tournament first round match at 8 p.m., Friday, in Tulsa, Okla.

Der, a junior outside hitter from Clarksville, Ind., is ranked 24th in the nation in kills with 4.34 per set and also 24th with 4.92 points per set. She leads Marshall in kills (460), attacks (1,377), service aces (37), points (521) and is third on the team in digs with 321.

"I'm really excited for Laura to be making first team," Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs said. "She has just had a heck of a year offensively. Her stats rank really high nationally and within the league. I think it's well deserved."

Shemanski was one of six players on the all-freshman team.

She leads the Herd with 96 total blocks and is seventh in the conference with 0.96 per set. The middle blocker from Jupiter, Fla., also averages 1.31 points per set.

Her 13 blocks against SMU was the second-most in school history.

Marshall's Laura Der digs out a Morehead State shot during their game on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington.
