Herd ranks 168th in ESPN Prestige Rankings

July 26, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall was tied for No. 168 in the ESPN Prestige Rankings, a listing of the best NCAA Division I men's basketball programs since the 1984-85 season.

The rankings reflect the most consistent, most prestigious programs since 1984-85 when the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams.

Marshall scored points in the rankings for winning Southern Conference championships and making NCAA tournament appearances in 1984-85 and 1986-87; getting an NIT berth in 1987-88; and winning 20 or more games five times.

But, Marshall lost points for having losing records in eight of the past 24 seasons.

The Thundering Herd was tied on the list with Arkansas State, Dayton and Radford.

VICTORY CLUB: Marshall University men's basketball is hosting a Victory Club Social.

The Aug. 4 event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Big Green Room of Cam Henderson Center. Refreshments will be served. The cost is $10.

Marshall head coach Donnie Jones originated the Victory Club last year as a booster support organization for the Thundering Herd. Victory Club membership is $100. Center Court membership is $1,200.

Club members and anyone interested in joining are invited.

Chances are the Thundering Herd team will be playing pick-up games during the social.

RSVP to Angela Orsini in the basketball office by Thursday at 696-6460 or orsini6@marshall.edu.

ROAD TRIP: Boston University is hosting Marshall in a Dec. 6 game at Agganis Arena.

Marshall beat the Terriers last season in Huntington, 70-47. Boston had a 14-17 record, but finished strong with nine wins in its final 12 games.

NEW JOBS: Josh Postorino, a former member of the Marshall coaching staff, was promoted at Clemson from director of basketball operations to an assistant coaching position.

Postorino worked previously for Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell at the University of Dayton.

He was on Ron Jirsa's staff at Marshall from 2003 to 2007.

Another former Jirsa assistant, Aki Collins (2003-06), was hired by first-year Marquette University head coach Buzz Williams as an assistant.

Collins was at Fairfield University for two seasons.
