Herd baseball team falls twice to Cent. Michigan

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Neal Jacobs had key hits in both games to lead Central Michigan to a doubleheader sweep over Marshall on Friday at Epling Park.

Jacobs drove in four runs to power the Chippeways to a 7-3 win in the opener. He blasted a three-run homer to right to spark highlight a five-run fifth as CMU (8-9) got the sweep with a 9-7 win.

In the opener, Jacobs belted a two-run homer in the fifth and added a two-run single in the eighth. He had two hits as did Cody Leichman.

The Thundering Herd (7-9) scored twice in the third and once in the eighth.

Jordan Foley worked the first six innings to get the win.

The second game went back and forth. The Herd collected three hits and scored three times in the third for a 4-2 lead.

The Chippewas rallied with five in the fifth and one in the sixth for an 8-4 lead.

The four-game series continues Saturday at noon Saturday. The finale is Sunday at noon.

Women's tennis

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Tulane, the No. 4 seed in the eight-team draw, beat Marshall, 4-1 in the Blue-Grey Classic at Legion Park, Tennis Center. The Green Wave is 9-5 and Thundering Herd is 6-7.

Dana Oppinger won at No. 2 for the Herd.

Marshall takes on Boise State on Saturday.

Women's track

TAMPA -- Marshall set one school record and tied another at the Bulls Invite on Friday.

Crystal Walker, Delkira Maybin, Moriah Njoku and Shanice Johnson finished fourth in the 4x100 relay in 45.97, the school record. Vanessa Jules cleared 1.78 meters in the high jump to tie her school mark and take second.

Amber Pierson, Jules, Loren Dyer and Johnson took second in the 4x400 (3:46.90).

In the 3,000, Kelly Mortakis was fourth (10:25.40), Lauren Bartoldson seventh (10:38.24) and Sammantha Stroker 10th (10:47.54). Amanda Kennedy was fifth in the javelin (42.95 meters) and Johnson eighth in the 800 (2:20.08).

Shyra Moulton was ninth in the 400 (57.41). Asia Bange was ninth in the 100 hurdles (14.35) and Amanda Hottenstein 10th in the shot put (12.48 meters).

The Herd will return to action next weekend at the Florida State Relays.

Softball

HUNTINGTON -- Due to weather reports, Marshall has moved up the starting time of Saturday's doubleheader against Southern Miss. In anticipation of rain, the Conference USA twinbill will start at noon. The Thundering Herd is 11-12, 0-3 C-USA. Southern Miss is 10-17, 0-3 in the league.
