MU roundup: Timko continues streak, but SMU beats Herd
LAS VEGAS -- Marshall's Karlyn Timko extended her winning streak in singles, but No. 50 SMU defeated the Thundering Herd, 5-2, Sunday.
Timko split sets at No. 6, but clinched the victory 10-7 in the super tiebreaker. It's her 10th straight win. Maria Vosekova prevailed at No. 3, splitting sets, then taking the super tiebreaker 10-7.
The Mustangs won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. They prevailed in four singles matches.
The Herd (8-9) will return to action Friday at home against Pitt. The match starts at 2 p.m.
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Marshall finished 21st in the Furman Intercollegiate played on the par-72 Furman University Course.
The Thundering Herd shot 314 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 922.
Nathan Kerns shot 77 in the final round for a 223 total. Other Herd scores were Brian Anania, 78 -- 228; Jeremy Rogers, 80 -- 235; Logan Lagodich, 79 -- 239; and Tas Sipowski, 85 -- 242.
Jake Miller, playing as an individual for the Herd, did not post a third-round score.
Virginia Tech shot 277 and won with a 843 total. North Florida was second with 862.
Samford's Drew Aimone and Iowa State's Scott Fernandez tied for medalist at 209.
Aimone shot 67 in the final round and Fernandez had 72. Virginia Tech's Mikey Moyers was third at 210 after posting a 67.
