Marshall falls in C-USA volleyball
HOUSTON -- Rice swept Marshall out of the Conference USA volleyball tournament quarterfinals, 3-0, on Friday.
Rice (20-8) won on its home court at Tudor Fieldhouse, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17.
"Obviously we're happy with a 3-0 win in the conference tournament," Rice coach Genny Volpe said. "I thought the girls were really focused, I think we started out a little bit tense, but they were pretty focused on being serious and taking care of business, so I was glad to see them loosen up and have a little fun out there and enjoy the atmosphere."
The Owls were led by All-CUSA players Ashleigh McCord and Natalie Bogan with 14 and nine kills respectively. Jenn McClean was the defensive leader with 23 digs while C-USA Libero of the Year Tracy Lam tracked down 20 digs.
Marshall's season ended with a 22-9 record.
"All the credit goes to Rice, we had two really neck and neck games, and they pulled them out at the end in games one and two," Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs said. "They had all the momentum, and even when we came out fired up for game three, they just changed it over and got rid of our emotions a little bit and played great, so best of wishes to Rice in the tournament.
"We just had way too many unforced errors, that's been our Achilles heel, and it caught us tonight."
Emily Sullivan, an all-conference player for Marshall, recorded 14 kills and Elizabeth Fleming had 29 assists. Kristin Marcum and Ryanne Milligan both had eight digs.
