March 11, 2009 @ 03:25 PM

MEMPHIS - Despite a furious rally, Marshall's bid to move on in the Conference USA men's basketball tournament came up short in a 60-59 loss to Rice on Wednesday afternoon.

Marshall led 24-22 early in the second half, but Rice went on a 21-6 lead to take a 43-30 lead on a 3-pointer from Connor Frizzelle with 9:59 left.

The Herd rallied with a 12-3 run to pull within 46-42 but never could get over the hump. Damier Pitts' 3-pointer with three seconds left pulled Marshall to within 60-59, but that is how the game ended.

Pitts' 3-pointer was one of only three on the day for Marshall. The Herd went just 3-of-24 (12.5 percent) from behind the 3-point line.

Darryl Merthie led Marshall with 14 points while Shaquille Johnson added 13. Pitts added 12 and senior Markel Humphrey ended his Marshall career with eight points and seven rebounds in his final contest.

Lawrence Ghoram led Rice with 18 points while Frizzelle added 14, including the game-winning free throw with six second remaining. Rodney Foster notched 12 points and six assists and Aleks Perka added 11 for Rice (10-21), who moves on to play Tulsa at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
