Marshall's Schiffbauer places fifth in USA race

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University distance runner Matt Schiffbauer placed fifth in the 1,500-meter run Sunday at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Schiffbauer, 18, is from Morgantown.

Mac Fleet of San Diego, Calif., the California state 1,600-meter champion, won the 1,500 with a time of 3:47.44. Blake Shaw from Houston, Texas, placed second with a time of 3:49.49. Schiffbauer was fifth at the University of Oregon's Heyward Field with a time of 3:52.65.

Schiffbauer was faster in Saturday's qualifying run with a time of 3:50.95.

The Marshall sophomore received All-Conference USA third team recognition in cross country as a freshman.

He finished 15 in the 8K C-USA Championships and had three top 10 finishes during the season.
