MU player comes in handy for Great Britain
HUNTINGTON -- Chantelle Handy from the Marshall University women's basketball team is the captain of her Great Britain squad playing in the World University Games.
Handy is a native of Durham, England.
Great Britain was 1-1 at the tournament for college-age teams in Belgrade, Serbia with a Friday night game against France to complete pool play. Second-round games begin Sunday.
Team USA defeated Great Britain, 93-59, on Thursday. Handy had 10 points and two rebounds. She made 5 of 6 shots.
"We played well," Handy said. "We came out of the second half a lot better than the first and did better than expected. We just went in knowing we had to win possession and had to improve from the last game."
Great Britain opened the event Wednesday by beating host Serbia, 76-67. Handy had 12 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
The World University Games are held every other year and are organized by the International University Sports Federation.
Handy, a 6-foot-3 senior at Marshall, averaged 11.0 points and 5.7 rebounds last season for the Thundering Herd.
